Sketchbook Part 1

"Your sketchbook will be the most important part of this class, all of your inspirations will be in this book. This will be a big part of your grade." That is what I walked into when I heard in the first class with Professor Schwestka. I had no idea that we were going to put so much work into this small little book. Every one had different book and every book had so many different combinations. I loved seeing everyone's work in their sketchbooks and sometimes I wish I could do what they do in their sketchbooks.

Our very first assignment was to draw three doodles in our sketchbook. I drew this lady because I love to design clothes on a body because there is never any clothes like Id like to draw. This was done with pencil

My favorite movie of all time is Gremlins and I have a little stuffed Gizmo, so I sat him down and drew him in pen. I was very nervous to draw in pen because you can't go back once you made a mistake.

I drew this elephant in pencil. It was colored in different colors but I was new to drawing so I wanted to keep trying in color. I drew the second elephant later in my class.

Our professor told us to draw a huge "USE ME." in our sketchbooks and to Use it!

Our first project was in geometric shapes and we took a day to explore them. I went outside and used charcoal and pencil to draw these geometric shapes.

These are doodles that were done in pencil while we were exploring geometric shapes.

Our professor told us to write everything, even our assignments into our journal. My favorite quote that he said was, "Art never happens in a vacuum."

He also gave us vocab words that we were to remember.
Geometric forms- shapes with angles.
Line quality- how the line looks.
Line density- how soft/hard the line looks
Composition- how you organize things

We were also to take a day exploring organic shapes and combining them with geometric shapes. I used colored pencil and pencil with this page. There are also notes about my photogram project and notan project.

I love to design clothes and this page I taped some of my older drawings of clothes designs. I drew the body in pencil and the clothes also then colored them with color pencil.

I also love flowers and I wanted to draw a simple flower in my sketchbook. I used oil pastels, which I love to use because I can blend them perfectly without getting them too smudged or messed up.

More doodles and an intro to our blog/website project. It tells about our Notan project as well.
Cyanotyping- blocking light to create a picture.

I love the idea of opposites (and flowers) and I wanted to show flowers in an opposite view, alive and death. Love and hate. Confident and unsure. I used oil pastels in a range of colors. I did not blend or smudge the alive, colorful side because they are sure of themselves and confident . The dead side is not and is unsure, hence the smudges and blends.

I drew this during my job as a waitress  at 5 & Diner. We were talking about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and I just started doodling in pen.
I doodled this graveyard in charcoal outside on one of our sketch days! I liked blending the blacks.

This was my pre-sketch to my Photogram collage. I used paint and colored pencils

This is the idea of notan. This was before I learned that it is only with two colors. I was told to sketch what I saw as notan, and me loving color, I used colored pencils on them all.

With the idea of Notan, I loved the opposites. I drew this out with devils and angels, in pencil. It is meant to be about a girl who is caught between two sides and she does not know who she is.

Close up.

My idea of notan after the professor told me it was with two colors only. This was done in pencil

My paragraph that we had to write about Notan.

This is a sketch of a young girl in pencil that I did during class.

This is my sketch before my organic project of a butterfly. I wanted to sketch it out before I started it so I would have something to look at. I made the butterfly more sharp than the bubbled edges. It was nice to have something to look off of than starting blind.
