Notan

Our next project we explored the concept of light and dark, or Notan. We took two classes to explore the concept in any medium we like. (In sketchbook) We also had to write a quick one paragraph description on notan with examples. We explored the traditional Notan which is simply black and white. We also explored notan with color variations. It could be black and white with one color or black/white with variations of one color.
Project: One 18x24 traditional Notan (B&W) and One Notan with color in it. Any medium we like.

Traditional Notan:

This was my pre-project. I wanted to draw it out in pencil once I started painting. It was very difficult to decide what I wanted to do with the traditional, (I sketched an option in my book, but did not like that.) My final was this and it turned out great below:

I liked the maze-type of works and I wanted to try that in this. I think that with the black and white it gives that illusion that it keeps going smaller and smaller forever. I used paint on this once, just black. I think that if i spaced my time better, I would use white paint and clean up the messy edges; and it would have looked way better! I am very in pressed on this because I used techniques of geometric and organic in it.

Non-traditional Notan:

This was my drawn out pre-project and the first section of paint. It was drawn in pencil using a ruler. I love flowers and wanted to put that into one of my projects. My favorite color is also green so I used that color with the black and white. The final project is one of my favorite also:

Final:

I added some whisps of black paint on the white edges. I didn't think I should have done the white whisps of paint because it would have turned out grayish- and I wanted strictly B&W. It was difficult to do black and keep it clean with a straight line. If I could have done it again, I would have done white paint; just like my traditional Notan.
